WORK/PROJECT: This fall for the first time SEEDS volunteers will be a part of the European TEAMGYM 2014 Championships. The tournament itself is 4 days long and has been growing every year since it was first held in Finland in 1996. This year 42 teams from 14 countries will come together in their quest to become the best in Europe.
Team Gymnastics is one of the fastest growing events within the gymnastic family and is enjoying increasing popularity in Europe. This high tempo sport combines music, dance, high level gymnastics and team spirit that fill spectators with great joy and excitement.
This gymnastic festival takes place in Laugardalshöll, which is Iceland’s number 1 sports arena. The TEAMGYM 2014 is a very big event and since Laugardalshöll cannot host the number of guests expected, the plan is to build up a venue within Laugardalshöll. Volunteers will help with building up this venue before the tournament starts and then taking it down after it finishes.
Volunteers will also help with sorting documents and goodie bags for the participants, as well as tickets for the tournament. Volunteers might also be asked to assist with security and catering during the tournament.
Volunteers will share all types of tasks related to the events and the group might be divided into smaller groups according to the needs and to give everyone the chance to try out different assignments. There might be work during the weekends, but free days will be given accordingly to the working days.
ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be lodged in a local house in Reykjavík, sleeping on mattresses in a shared room. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Shower facilities may be located outside the actual accommodation, in a sports hall or swimming pool.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. During the tournament some meals will be served. Do not forget some traditional/typical food from your home country for an international evening.
LOCATION: Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, often called “the nightlife capital of the North”. But there is more to Reykjavík than pubs and clubs. Reykjavík also gathers the most interesting of Icelandic culture. It is an incubator of new ideas and styles which often indicates new global trends. It is an International city with a lively Cosmopolitan cultural scene.
The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and America. It is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic on almost all sides. In the area closer than 100 km from Reykjavik, there are several spectacular waterfalls, geysers, impressive coastline and the well-known geothermal Blue Lagoon spa to visit.
The population of the city is over 200.000 including the metropolitan area, so two thirds of Iceland’s inhabitants live here. Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with beautiful nature, using renewable energy sources - geothermal power and glacial rivers.
In October you can see the Northern lights (Aurora Borealis) in Iceland.
